Impact/Purpose:

This article presents results of studies conducted to evaluate the efficacy of various concentration methods used for t he recovery of microorganisms in water samples. The studies were done to improve the estimation of swimming-associated health risks from biological pathogens. Historically, bacterial indicator levels have been used to assess the health risk of surface waters associated with recreational beaches, however beach waters are seldom monitored for the pathogens themselves. The research addresses this short coming by evaluating the recovery of pathogens or pathogen surrogates in tap and lake water samples.
